Communicate with your dog. It is up to you to tell people to stand down or go forward.
Take control of the situation because if you take control and your attitude is that of discipline your dog will reflect that.
Take control of yourself and you will have control of your dog.
All you have to do is to control of your own dog and not worry about anything else. If you know how your dog will respond and you know how you will respond that is the most important thing.
In a local department here they held a graduating class for K-9's. They could not have the dogs close together; they could not give their acceptance speech on this graduation day because their dogs would not quit barking to do it. A handler put her dog in the unit to wait and the dog tore the unit apart.
This is a fully trained law enforcement dog dual purpose K-9 and they could not be controlled during the graduation.
What does that say?
When we get into an uncontrolled situation where we have people and their adrenaline is flying, people are yelling and screaming and perhaps someone is lost. During all this distraction it is our character and our attitude that is going to instil within the dog purpose and the carrying out of whatever task we do.
Your dog's stability is a direct reflection of your character.
There is no bad dog.
There is only the character of the handler, the response and responsiblity of the handler towards the dog.
If you want your dog to bite, he'll bite. If you want your dog to track, he'll track. If you are undecided, he'll be undecided. If you are confused, he'll be confused.
He will bond to you to comfort your during your confusion.
If someone affects you and over powers you the dog will bond to you, comfort you, get close to you and protect you.
If you are caught up in feeling sorry for yourself or under the stress he'll interact of his own accord, which means he'll lash out.
The one lesson we want to learn most effectively and more importantly than all others is we and we alone affect the dog.
