WORKING SERVICE DOGS

At our home no one is permitted to pet our dogs except children and family members.
Often people are offended when I tell them this and my answer to this is to get your own dog if you want to pet a dog.
Our dogs in our home are here for a reason and have a job to do. But by the same token any child coming in to our home is permitted to pet the dogs.
Children are not a threat to dogs. A stable dog does not perceive them as a threat.

We do not leave our dogs alone with children or never have used the dogs as babysitters. That is in itself another editorial.

I am responsible for my children and my animals in my home. It is really quite simple but society has made it complicated. We all have our rights and our entitlements which we think enables us to go into someone’s home and do what we like or what we think they should allow us to do.

What happened to the days when you left strange dogs alone? As a young kid when we got bit by a strange dog we were asked, “ What were you doing petting the dog anyway?”
You see people; back then, common sense was the rule of the day.

Let me state that although many things have changed; the desires of others should not dictate what rules we make in our own lives and in our own homes.

We must be responsible for our own dogs. We cannot be responsible for the actions of people who visit in our homes so when people ask me "Can I pet the dogs?" my answer is a simple "No."
By saying this and by sometimes offending people, I am a responsible dog owner.
