WORKING SERVICE DOGS

Male Versus Female

The differences between male versus female as a working dog are virtually unknown by the majority of the dog world.
The reason for this is simple; it is a male dog market.

For years the dogs used in and around the world have been drawn from the sporting world. A world in which the bigger male has been marketed as the best. The "best". A title, which cannot truthfully be carried because the female has never had equal testing.

Why has the female not been tested? It is simply ignorance.

The facts of the female capabilities in performance prove she is the better choice. This proof can be substantiated by records of those who actually used the dog in work not in sport. During World War 1, females were used over males by both the Germans and the British for mine detection and under combat conditions.
Not only were they used they were preferred. The actual training of detection dogs was very different from today's training. It remained that way until after World War 11.
Changes then began which has led to today's ineffective techniques.

Many sporting people and their advocates will deny this.
I have heard that one trainer states that one in twenty thousand females can do scent work. This statement is not only arrogant but a down right lie.
Numbers such as these are drawn from the sky.

Nature puts more importance on the female so why then do we, as man, not?
